In every industry, there are a few people whose journeys feel like roadmaps — not because they had it easy, but because they carved their path with grit, honesty, and unshakeable self-belief. For me, in the world of fashion, that person has always been Sabyasachi Mukherjee.

Growing up, his name was more than a label. It felt like a promise — that talent born in unlikely places can still bloom into something extraordinary. Today, as I work towards building my own career in fashion journalism, I keep finding myself drawn to his story all over again.

A Journey That Began With Almost Nothing

What inspires me most about Sabyasachi is not just the opulence of his designs or the global stature he commands today. It’s the humility of his beginnings. A small-town boy from Kolkata, raised in a middle-class household, selling his books to pay his way through NIFT — this isn’t the typical origin story we hear in fashion.

But that’s exactly why it resonates with me.

His journey is a reminder that greatness doesn’t always start with connections or privilege. Sometimes, it begins with a quiet conviction that you deserve to be seen.

Choosing Craft Over Chaos

In an industry obsessed with speed, glamour, and instant relevance, Sabyasachi made the radical choice to slow down. To honour the craft. To revive techniques that the world had forgotten. To centre his career on Indian artisans when everyone else was looking west.

That courage — to stay rooted while dreaming big — is something I admire deeply.

As I shape my voice as a writer and journalist, I hope to carry the same intention: to tell stories that matter, stories that preserve, stories that remind people why fashion is more than fabric. It is culture. It is identity. It is history.

Turning Vulnerability Into Power

Another part of his journey that stays with me is his honesty about struggle — personal, emotional, artistic. He speaks openly about being rejected, criticised, misunderstood. He talks about loneliness, fear, and the days when nothing seemed to work.

And yet, he kept going.

That resilience fuels me on the days when my goals feel too far away, when rejections pile up, or when self-doubt creeps in. If he could hold on through the darkest stretches of his journey, then maybe I can hold on too.

A Legacy Built on Authenticity

Today, Sabyasachi is not just a designer; he is a cultural force. A storyteller. A preserver of Indian heritage. Someone who has redefined what it means to be global while staying unapologetically Indian.

His career reinforces a truth I want to carry into my own:Authenticity is your greatest asset.Consistency is your magic. And purpose is your compass.

Why His Story Matters to My Own

As someone building a future in fashion journalism, I look at his journey not for glamour, but for guidance. He reminds me that slow growth is still growth. That the world will eventually celebrate your voice if you stay loyal to it. And that no dream is too audacious if you are willing to work hard — and work honestly.

Sabyasachi’s story tells me that it’s okay to start small, to feel lost, to carve your own lane one imperfect step at a time. Because success was never meant to be instant. It was meant to be earned.

And maybe, one day, I’ll get to tell stories with the same depth, reverence, and soul that his work inspires in me today.

Khushi Sethi.
